Our Climate Report

We believe in a brighter future, and aim to take a leading role of sustainability work in our industry.

Why this is important to us?

We aim to take a leading role of sustainability and climate work in the lighting industry. We are aware that this is a very ambitious goal, but also necessary. That’s why we believe in transparency toward our customers, suppliers, and other stakeholders - hopefully we can inspire others on the way.

In parallell with our daily operations we are working with both current and specific projects that cover our social, economic and environmental responsibility.

Measuring our climate footprint is one of the tools that will guide us to do better today and tomorrow. Since we aim to be proactive in sustainability work, we have already made improving steps since this calculation was done, but we still have a long way to go.

The aim of this project was to calculate the company-wide emissions of Markslöjd, using the framework and calculation methods presented in the GHG protocol.

What is the GHG protocol?

The GHG Protocol establishes comprehensive global standardized frameworks to measure and manage greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from private and public sector operations, value chains and mitigation actions. Source: https://ghgprotocol.org/about-us

GHG calculations and accounting of year 2021

This data is collected with an external sustainability consultant. Collecting data on CO2-emissions from 2021, which covers Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3.

Scope 1

Direct emissions from using company-owned vehicles, or emissions from own production of cooling or heating.

Scope 2

Indirect emissions from the generation of purchased electricity, heat, or steam used by us. These emissions are considered indirect because they are not produced directly by us, but they are still a consequence of our activities.

Scope 3

Indirect emissions from purchased goods and services, business travel or employee commuting, from the production of raw materials to the final disposal of products at the end of their life cycle.

Comments on Scope 3

Scope 3 emissions are often the largest component of a company’s overall carbon footprint and can be difficult to measure and track. Scope 3 emissions are the greenhouse gas emissions associated with our entire value chain, from the production of raw materials to the final disposal of products at the end of their life cycle.

Actions we have taken since 2021

We work continuously on reducing our climate impact. The calculation of our GHG emissions covers 2021 and we got the results in 2023. Since then we have:

Reduced the use of styrofoam in packaging (only a few articles left).
Reduced use of plastic wrapping inside our packaging.
Collaboration with new suppliers in Europe.
Installed solar energy in our warehouse in Poland.
Replaced plactics to paper in packaging from our warehouse.

Goals for 2025

Alongside our long-term goals, we commit to reaching these goals by 2025:

Lowering our emissions with 50% by 2025 (Scope 1 and Scope 2)
New company-owned vehicles will be hybrid or electrical, no fossil fuel. (Scope 1)
Upgrading our lighting in the Skene warehouse will result in 35% reduction of used kilowatt hours. (Scope 2)
Become more proactive in informing our customers on how to choose energy-smart accessories to our products, to help reduce the climate foot-print of our products. (Scope 3)
Minimize our waste by rescuing before recycling - save 1000 items from becoming recycled and launch them in our ”Almost New” assortment. (Scope 3)
Initiate new projects to reduce emissions from our purchased goods and services in the long-term. (Scope 3)
